Rats & Mice
In Britain there are two species of Rat: the Norway Rat (brown rat or common rat) and the Black Rat or Roof Rat. The Brown rat has mainly taken over as the most common type of rat.
Recent research has been carried out that shows the rural Brown Rat is more likely to carry disease than the Urban Rat because the rural rat population is more dense and therefore more difficult to control. However both must be controlled.
Rats are a pest to domestic areas, agriculture, horticulture and businesses, especially food storage facilities and restaurants.
Rats will eat almost anything even down to the seed droppings from a simple bird feeder in your garden.
Mice are similar in some ways but feed more sporadically. The solution is more often than not the same.
Rats can come up from the sewer and have been known to climb toilet waste pipes. They can then enter your house and chew electrical cables which can cause fire.
Use of bait boxes containing poison have proven to be increasingly ineffective due to rats building up a resistance to most poisons (especially the south of England). Also, birds of prey then eat the poisoned rat or mouse and therefore been secondarily poisoned. Barn owls are the most common bird of prey that have had residue of these poisons found in them.
